New Look for Mastbaum High School
Donated cleats helping players get a kick out of soccer.
The Ocean City Barons General Manager Neil Holloway had some new cleats gathering dust at the Barons office in OC, and during a conversation with Jim Taylor (who’s Mainland Utd Travel Team he helps train) the topic of conversation got round to Jim’s High School team in Philadelphia.

The Inner City High School soccer team has a United Nations feel to it, with players from all over the globe, many of whome have never played a High School soccer game wearing soccer cleats. Holloway immediately thought of the cleats idly sat around the office and donated them to the Mastbaum High School Boys Soccer Team.

Soccer fans who would look at the Ocean City Barons’ 9-4-3 regular season record at face value might not understand just how special the 2009 season was. Winning nine games is nothing new to the Ocean City franchise. They have reached the nine-win mark (or more) five of their seven years in the Premier Development League (PDL), but it was their four combined wins in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and the PDL playoffs that set the 2009 campaign apart from all the others, including the undefeated 2004 season.

Midfielder Rory McCrea (Hofstra / Leeds, England) has been named the most valuable player with Byron Carmichael (Marshall / Lumberton, NJ) and Tunde Ogunbiyi (Boston College / Gwynedd, PA) voted as the offensive and defensive MVPs respectively. The awards were voted on by coaches, team officials and the players themselves.

"Since this was such a tight nit group, we asked the players to vote on the team MVP," said head coach Neil Holloway. "We also included the coaches’ point of view and the front office staff, so we had a true overall perspective for this year’s awards."

Joe Banks, the captain of the Barons PDL team, is in his sixth season with the club, but his tenth year if you count his time spent as a member of the Barons youth academy. Banks was a part of the inaugural academy team and after a successful career at Drexel University, he is now a coach in that very same academy for the U-16 Girls.

This year, Banks has had a great season, starting the first 14 games of the season, before suffering an injury that kept him out of the final two games. He scored two goals in those 14 games, including a game-winner on June 13 against the Westchester Flames. He led a defense that had a 0.96 goals against average, the second best mark in club history.

The Ocean City Barons have been eliminated from the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup after they fell to D.C. United, 2-0, on Tuesday evening at the Maryland Soccerplex. The Barons held the game scoreless until the 74th minute when a Christian Gomez penalty kick forced Ocean City to throw the kitchen sink forward looking for an equalizer, but they were unable to tie the game. United would add a late stoppage time goal to put the game away and end the Cup run of the tournament’s last remaining amateur club.

Many of the more than 2,000 fans in attendance, many of them Barons fans who traveled down to the game, expected the defending Open Cup champions would have more possession, increasing their opportunities for goals, but numerous players stepped up on the Barons’ defensive end to keep the game level going into the halftime break. For the second time in three years, the Ocean City Barons have pulled off an upset in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at the expense of the USL Second Division’s Crystal Palace Baltimore. The Barons used a pair of first half goals from Byron Carmichael (Marshall / Lumberton, NJ) and a J.T. Noone (Temple / Harrisburg, PA) tally late in the game to eliminate the professional side at Carey Stadium, the same place they pulled off their 2007 upset. With the victory, the Barons will host another USL-2 team, the Real Maryland Monarchs, next Tuesday at 7 p.m. The winner of that match will take on a yet-to-be named Major League Soccer team in the Third Round.

In the lone upset of the Open Cup’s First Round, the Barons become the first amateur team to eliminate a pro team in the 2009 edition of the event. It was the third Open Cup win over a pro team in club history, with all three coming at The Beach House against USL-2 opponents (2005 - Long Island Rough Riders, 4-0 & 2007 - Crystal Palace Baltimore, 1-0).

Ryan Finley moves up ladder to PDL team
Former U-17 national teamer becomes youngest to score for Barons' PDL squad

Finley competed on the international stage with the U.S. U-17 National Team
At the Premier Development League (PDL) level, high school soccer players rarely find the field. Rosters are usually made up of top college players, veterans and even a few former professionals, making it difficult for a player of that age to crack the starting lineup. But Ryan Finley (Rancocas Valley HS / Lumberton, NJ) isn’t your typical high school player.

Finley is returning to Rancocas Valley High School (RVHS) this fall after spending 18 months at the U.S. Soccer Under-17 Residency Program located at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., where he had the opportunity to train at the United States’ premier soccer school. After gaining a tremendous amount of international experience, the Lumberton, N.J. native returned home and joined the Ocean City Barons PDL side for the 2008 season.
